Daterra was conceived in the 80’s, when the term “sustainability” was not as popular as it is today. However the Daterra Coffee project was planned to produce specialty coffee complying objectives of envirornmental preservation and social development. Daterra should be able to ensure consistency and trust to its clients building with them alliances and partnership.

Daterra first started growing coffee in their family farm in Franca (Mogiana region) which was formerly used to produce grade A milk. Daterra’s first pioneer, Luis Pascoal, had the oportunity at this time to meet Dr. Ernesto Illy, who encouraged him to look for lands in Cerrado Mineiro.

Luis found that the area of Patrocínio, in Cerrado Mineiro, was exceptional for growing coffee thanks to its high altitude terroirs and ideal climate that could provide unique flavors and aroma profiles.

That was when they settled down in Cerrado, acquiring Boa Vista and Tabuoes farms. The estates were in very poor condition though from both agronomical and environmental perspectives.

It took Daterra 10 years to recover the area well enough to produce good quality coffee and begin exporting. The experience thay have acquired along these years made possible for Daterra to be the first Rainforest Alliance and ISO 14001 certified coffee farm in Brazil. Later they could also add UTZ Kapeh and, for a small organic portion the farm, IBD Organic.

To reinforce the principles of sustainability, Daterra also decided to sell coffee only to sustainably certified importers in order to stimulate the entire production chain. Daterra also shares knowledge among smaller producers to promote social progress and to develop expertise on how to keep producing high quality coffee in harmony with nature.

Daterra aims to investigate and continuously innovate, relying on science, technology and a lot of passion to protect and improve the second most important hot spot in the world, the Cerrado Bioma eco-region.
